Echoes of Titanic

Mindy Starns Clark
Echoes of Titanic

I read this on my Nook in 48 hours-it was really good. Kelsey Tate's great grandmother survived the Titanic and the book jumps back and forth from the present day to 1912 when Adele and her cousin Joselyn experienced the trip and the collision. In the present day, the book includes a company takeover when decendants insist that it was actually Joselyn who survived. Kelsey is sure it was Adele and fights to clear her family name. There is also a love interest and much info about the family company and the workings of it. This was fascinating and I was anxious to get to the end to see how it would all come out. The Light Between Oceans

The Light Between Oceans

Tom is a lighthouse keeper on a very secluded island off the Australia shore. He marries, but Isabelle has miscarriages and a still birth and when a boat comes ashore with a dead man and a very small baby, against their better judgment, they decided to keep the baby.  Of course the truth does come out and life is very complicated after that. This wasn't a really fast moving book but it did hold my attention and I would recommend it. Check our catalog.

Before I Say Goodbye DVD

The Mary Higgins Clark Collection
Before I Say Goodbye DVD

I like suspense DVD's and this was a thriller. I knew it would be having read so many Mary Higgins Clark's books over the years. Nell is groomed to run for Congress and her husband, whom she loves, is not being supportive. When he is blown up in a boating accident, a lot of hidden agendas open up about his architect department and the people he works with. Quite a good viewing. Check our Catalog

God Grew Tired of Us, A Memoir

God Grew Tired of Us, A Memoir

Adult non fiction 962.404

I read this book on my Nook on vacation. In 2001 during a war in Sudan, thousands of boys from age 12 and up were uprooted and marched across Africa seeking refuge. It was a terrifying life for these " lost boys of Sudan". They suffered from hunger, pain, bullets and everything else you could imagine.John was able to get some education and eventually came to Syracuse, New York with the help of many people and a church. Life was so different in the U.S. and he had much to learn. The book tells of his long march, his eventual arrival in the states and the difficulties he and the other boys had learning a whole new culture.

Fascinating book, not always pleasant to read but inspiring. Check our catalog

Son

Lois Lowry
Son

This is a companion book to the Giver by Lois Lowry. I had read the Giver years ago but remembered what it was about. In Son a young woman becomes a birthmother and has to give away her baby. She locates him in a nursery and spends the rest of her life trying to connect with him. The book reminds me of the Hunger Games with the type of civilization the people are living in and used to. When Claire gets away, she has another type of life and it takes her a while to get used to the 'elsewhere' which is our type of living. Very interesting Science Fiction book and worth reading. Mosaic

Mosaic

This book reminded me of the movie (and book) Not With My Daughter. The Labanese father takes his two children back to his family compound in Lebanon and the mother tries to get them back to NYC. The father really thought the children would be destroyed by the American morals, especially so since the older son is gay and has been banned from the house. It is a good picture of life in the Middle East and just how our culture is so different. It was a compelling read. Check our Catalog

Suzanne Collins

Kerrily Sapet
Suzanne Collins

Since the Hunger Games series is so popular, I decided to read a biography of the author, Suzanne Collins. It was fascinating and I think the teens will enjoy it. All the things that led up to the sereis is discussed as well as the making of the movie. We have quite a few other books and series by Collins such as Gregor the Overlander books which are very popular. Short and very enjoyable read. Check our Catalog

The Lifeboat

Charlotte Rogan
The Lifeboat

I like to read survival stories and this one started out like the Titanic. Forty people were in a lifeboat when their ship sank. They were in the small boat for 21 days and the book shows how they survived and how a number of people did not. Some died from starvation, weather or jumped or were pushed from the boat!  Then there is a trial of 3 women who are accused of murdering their fellow passengers.  This is a slow moving novel but I had to finish it to see how it all came out.  Very interesting.  I would recommend sticking with it to the end. Check our catalog ..

True Sisters

Sandra Dallas
True Sisters

This was a painful survival story but I couldn't put it down.  It is historical fiction about the Mormons who pushed hand carts from Iowa to Salt Lake City.  It was so hard to read, people dying, starving, having babies, battling snow storms. But their faith made them push on despite all the troubles.  There was a lot of history in this book as well as following 4 different women and their families.   It is worth reading.  Check our catalog.
