The End of Dieting

Joel Fuhrman
The End of Dieting

Summary: In The End of Dieting, Joel Fuhrman M.D., a board–certified family physician who specializes in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional and natural methods, and #1 New York Times bestselling author of Eat to Live, Super Immunity and The End of Diabetes, delivers a powerful paradigm-shifting book that shows us how and why we never need to diet again.

Fuhrman writes, "By reading this book, you will understand the key principles of the science of health, nutrition and weight loss. It will give you a simple and effective strategy to achieve—and maintain—an optimal weight without dieting for the rest of your life. This new approach will free you forever from a merry-go-round of diets and endless, tedious discussions about dieting strategies. This is the end of dieting."

My opinion:  I really enjoyed learning about Dr. Fuhrman’s insight on nutrition and learning about his Nutritarian diet. This book has helped me to become more aware of healthier food options and to be more mindful about my relationship and choices with food. I was surprised to discover that I like many of the recipes in this book and that following as close to his Nutritarian diet isn’t as hard to do as I thought.  Check our catalog

Skin Cleanse

The Simple, All-Natural Program for Clear, Calm, Happy Skin

"If you're like most women, you've been on a never-ending quest for perfect skin—or even just good skin—since adolescence. It's a frustrating pursuit to say the least, filled with one disappointing (and expensive) miracle solution after another. Why is it so hard to get good skin? Adina Grigore, founder of the organic skincare line S.W. Basics, would argue that getting clear, calm, happy skin is about much more than products and peels. Or, rather, it's about much less. In Skin Cleanse, she guides readers through a holistic program designed to heal skin from the inside out."

This book is informative and I especially like the chapters that include natural DIY skin care recipes.

I Quit Sugar

Sara Wilson
I Quit Sugar

Your Complete 8-Week Detox Program and Cookbook

From the book cover:

“Sarah Wilson thought of herself as a relatively healthy eater. She didn’t realize how much sugar was hidden in her diet, or how much it was affecting her well-being. When she learned that her sugar consumption could be the source of a lifetime of mood swings, fluctuating weight, sleep problems, and thyroid disease, she knew she had to make a change.

What started as an experiment to eliminate sugar--both the obvious and the hidden kinds--soon became a way of life, and now Sarah shows you how you can quit sugar too.”

I like this book. Cutting back on sugar (fructose) and getting back into clean eating habits has been on my agenda lately. This book was a good kickstart for me. It has some of useful tips, information, and recipes.

The Murder House

Saturday, April 30, 2016
James Patterson and David Ellis
The Murder House

No. 7 Ocean Drive is a gorgeous, multi-million-dollar beachfront estate in the Hamptons, where money and privilege know no bounds. But its beautiful gothic exterior hides a horrific past: it was the scene of a series of depraved killings that have never been solved. Neglected, empty, and rumored to be cursed, it's known as the Murder House, and locals keep their distance.

Detective Jenna Murphy used to consider herself a local, but she hasn't been back since she was a girl. Trying to escape her troubled past and rehabilitate a career on the rocks, the former New York City cop hardly expects her lush and wealthy surroundings to be a hotbed of grisly depravity. But when a Hollywood power broker and his mistress are found dead in the abandoned Murder House, the gruesome crime scene rivals anything Jenna experienced in Manhattan. And what at first seems like an open-and-shut case turns out to have as many shocking secrets as the Murder House itself, as Jenna quickly realizes that the mansion's history is much darker than even the town's most salacious gossips could have imagined. As more bodies surface, and the secret that Jenna has tried desperately to escape closes in on her, she must risk her own life to expose the truth--before the Murder House claims another victim.

Full of the twists and turns that have made James Patterson the world's #1 bestselling writer, The Murder House is a chilling, page-turning story of murder, money, and revenge.

One perk of working at the library is seeing what the good reads are from our patrons. This book was on my cart to shelve. The title and cover art caught my attention so I decided to give it a try. Murder mysteries are not my typical genre, but I have to say, this was captivating. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the guessing game involved in solving the mystery. Thank you to the patron that inadvertently introduced me to this good read!

Me Before You

Jojo Moyes
Me Before You

I learned about this book from seeing an official movie trailer on a social media site. It looked like a movie that I would enjoy seeing. I prefer to read books before viewing their movies. I thought Me Before You was a good book. There were times when I didn’t want to put it down and am looking forward to seeing the movie when it is released in June 2016.

Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordinary life—steady boyfriend, close family—who has barely been farther afield than her tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex-Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair-bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life—big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel—and he is not interested in exploring a new one.

Will is acerbic, moody, bossy—but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, Lou sets out to show him that life is still worth living.

Me Before You brings to life two people who couldn’t have less in common—a heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?

Unbroken : a World War II story of survival, resilience, and redemption

Laura Hillenbrand
Unbroken : a World War II story of survival, resilience, and redemption

About the book:

On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.

The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he’d been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.

Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

My review:

This is an excellent book that is well worth the read.  Check our Catalog

Mahalas Lane

Hello, friends! Mahalas Lane is an impressive debut novel by first-time author, Marianne Cushing. It is a well-written 230 pages murder/mystery/romance that was inspired by Marianne’s summer stay at the charmingly quaint Maine cottage on Mahalas Lane. The suspenseful plot and beautifully descripted New England, Maine setting with interesting twists kept my full attention until the very end. This book makes for a perfect weekend read or if you’re drawn in like I was, you’ll have it completed in less than a day!
