Officer Buckle and Gloria

My 4 year old has been enjoying the library’s collection of books with accompanying CDs so she can listen to stories in the car.  One of our favorites is easily “Office Buckle & Gloria”.  Narrated by John Lithgow, he brings the words to life and makes the story that much more entertaining.  We highly recommend for preschool and early elementary children.  You’re sure to enjoy it!  Check our Catalog

Heather the Violet Fairy (Rainbow Magic:Rainbow Fairies series)

Heather the Violet Fairy

I have been enjoying reading these Early Chapter Books to my preschool age daughter. These have been a nice change of pace from the many picture books we've read. We both like reading a few chapters a night and we can't wait until the next night to see what happens next.  I also appreciated that although there is a villain in the book (Jack Frost & his goblins), he didn't seem too scary.  I also appreciated that the characters all behaved & spoke nicely to one another; and I especially liked how in the last book, Heather the Violet Fairy, when Jack Frost is finally apprehended, the fairies have the option of doing something mean to him but instead choose to take a higher road.  We're both looking forward to enjoying more of the Rainbow Magic series books together.  If you have a preschool or early elementary child that enjoys fairies, I think they'll enjoy these books. Sofia the First Songs and Story

If you have a little one that enjoys "Sofia the First", they'll love this CD. It features 4 songs from the TV movie and series including our 2 favorites: the "Sofia the First" theme song and "True Sisters" followed by an 18 minute long story with character voices! (The 18 minute story was the TV movie.)

In addition to keeping my little one busy and engaged during a car trip, I think it's the perfect way to begin introducing the concept of Audiobooks to a little one, we'll move to Audiobooks with accompanying picture books. Check our catalog

Good night, Gorilla

Good night, Gorilla

I have been enjoying this, one of my absolute favorite books for 0-3 year olds, with my children.  This picture/board book has wonderfully descriptive pictures that tell the story.  I love the facial expressions and how the story is conveyed with its pictures, and very few words.  The story chronicles a gorilla who manages to swipe the zookeeper’s keys as he does a final evening walk-through at the zoo.  As he says goodnight to each animal, the gorilla unlocks their cage and they all follow the zookeeper home & into his bedroom.  When he turns off the light & his wife says goodnight, she is quite startled to hear a multitude of “goodnights” echoed back to her & shocked when she turns on the light to find a grinning gorilla and his animal friends in her house!

The repetitive ‘goodnight’ phrases throughout the story also make this a great book to read at bedtime.

Chickens to the Rescue

My daughter (age 3) and I have really been enjoying the picture book, "Chickens to the Rescue." Starting at the beginning of the week, the farmer or another family member faces a dilemma each day. But don't worry..."Chickens to the Rescue!!!" They manage to save the day each time. When the farmer accidentally drops his watch in the well, the chickens are right there in bathing suits and snorkel gear to retrieve it! A humorous book for the preschool age (& grown-ups will enjoy as well). Check our catalog

Glow by Amy Ryan

“Part of the first generation to be conceived in deep space, fifteen-year-old Waverly is expected to marry young and have children to populate a new planet, but a violent betrayal by the dogmatic leader of their sister ship could have devastating consequences.”

I found myself thinking a lot about this book after I had read it – which to me is a sign of a great book.  For me this book explored the “doing the ‘right’ thing” theme in-depth… which characters really did the right thing and what would I have done?  What sacrifices were necessary for the greater good?  Where are these lines drawn?

Older teens and adults would enjoy as well as fans of science fiction, survival, dystopia, and action adventure.  While not overly similar to the Hunger Games, I think fans would enjoy this book as well due to similar themes and struggles.
(This is the first book in the "Sky Chasers" series, second book "Spark" scheduled to be published July 17, 2012.)

First Look and Find: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

The "First Look and Find" series of books are great for 2 year olds!  Each page has a box containing pictures for your toddler to find within the larger picture.  My duaghter and I have been enjoying using the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (First Look and Find) book together.  I felt so proud when she was so excited to find the images in the picture.  She is so excited to show me how she can do it by herself!  A great way to boost toddlers' independence and confidence.
