Disney’s Beauty and the Beast: The Broadway Musical (CD)

Having just attended the local Community Theater of Howell production of the musical Beauty and the Beast, my granddaughter and I fell in love with the music and wondered if we could find the soundtrack here at our Howell library. A short catalog search later and I had the soundtrack in my hands. The same had happened when we attended Cinderella at Howell High School last year, as well as watching the movie Annie. There is a wealth of music on CD here, soundtracks of every type from kids’ movies to hip hop movies and everything in between. Not to mention that if Howell doesn’t own it, it is more than likely possible to interloan a soundtrack as well. We are so enjoying listening again to the beautiful music from the musical!

A Pentatonix Christmas (CD)

This holiday album by the a cappella group Pentatonix gives a fun and unique twist to some familiar  tunes such as “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” (up tempo), “White Christmas” (jazzy), and “Up on the Housetop” (playful). There is an amazingly soulful rendition of “Hallelujah.” If you have not listened to any of Penatonix’s work before, now is a good time to give it a try!

Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon – and the Journey of a Generation

If you are of a certain age and you listen to music, you know these names. Three female singer-songwriters whose careers took off in the 1960s and whose paths crossed in various ways. The biographies of these three iconic musicians start with each of their childhoods and weave their stories throughout the book. These are strong vibrant women who have very human frailties and challenges. A good summer read.

Bad Self Portraits (Music CD)

Lake Street Dive
Bad Self Portraits

After seeing this group perform on Stephen Colbert, I checked our catalog to see if we had any of their music, and I found this CD. Lake Street Dive is a so-called "indie" pop band, but there is more to their music than that description brings to mind. You can hear lots of influences in their music--R&B, soul, retro rock, jazz, and even country. The lead singer has a rich contralto voice, so unlike a lot of female pop stars of today who sing in the upper registers. You can imagine them playing their songs in a small club, but I think they are poised for a larger audience after seeing them on TV. A lot of the songs have a “hook”--they are catchy and you will find yourself humming the tune later after having listened to it. There are also interesting rhythms and beats that make you sit up and listen. I especially liked the title song, but all of the songs are good. They have a new CD coming out this month, which I am looking forward to hearing. Lake Street Drive is a good band that I’m glad to have discovered.

Partners music CD

Barbra Streisand

I am listening to "Partners", Barbra Streisand's new album.  This CD has 12 timeless songs featuring Streisand in a duet with a popular male vocalist.  All the songs are classics, some of them Streisand classics.   The songs are remixed in a format that suits both performers.  For example, the “People” duet with Steve Wonder incorporates his harmonica, and it works.    Among the songs included are "New York State Of Mind," with Billy Joel, "Come Rain Or Come Shine," with John Mayer, "Love Me Tender," with Elvis Presley, "The Way We Were," with Lionel Richie, "What Kind Of Fool," with John Legend, "I Can Still See Your Face," with Andrea Bocelli, "Evergreen," with Babyface, a first studio-recorded duet with her son Jason Gould, on "How Deep Is The Ocean."  If you are a fan of great vocal performances, you will enjoy this CD.

Sofia the First Songs and Story

If you have a little one that enjoys "Sofia the First", they'll love this CD. It features 4 songs from the TV movie and series including our 2 favorites: the "Sofia the First" theme song and "True Sisters" followed by an 18 minute long story with character voices! (The 18 minute story was the TV movie.)

In addition to keeping my little one busy and engaged during a car trip, I think it's the perfect way to begin introducing the concept of Audiobooks to a little one, we'll move to Audiobooks with accompanying picture books. Check our catalog

Big and Rich
Comin' to your city

I will be seeing this country singing duo before another show and decided I needed to hear them and learn their style before the performance.  I don't usually care for country music but really enjoy Big and Rich.  Their lyrics are easy to understand and make a lot of sense.  I think I'll enjoy them in person.  We have 6 of their CDs so other people must like them also.  Check our catalog

Hurry Up, We're Dreaming

Hurry Up, We're Dreaming

Before you read on let me ask you a question, do you like electronic music? If you answered “yes” read on. If you answered “no” also read on because M83’s album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming is great music whether you like synthesizers being predominately featured in your music or not. The two disc album from M83 is almost progressive in nature but many of the songs are very catchy. Tracks like Midnight City drive with help from a saxophone solo while Wait is slow dance type song which I can only describe as beautiful.  Check our catalog
