The Big Short (DVD)

This movie is based on the book of the same name, and is about the fall of the banking industry that caused the world-crippling financial crisis from 2007-2010. While the subject is complex, this film does a great job of explaining the economic intricacies of the banking industry so the story is easy to follow. The characters are great, especially Steve Carell, who plays hedge fund manager Mark Baum. Don’t let the subject intimidate you; this movie is very entertaining and has an important message.

The Finest Hours (DVD and Blu-ray)

This is an incredible movie based on the true story of the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history. In 1952, in a massive storm, an oil tanker is split in half. The Coast Guard sends their only boat (a small one) out to attempt a rescue. You’ll find it utterly amazing what these men went through. A great movie I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

Jane Got a Gun (DVD and Blu-ray)

Whether you grew up watching Westerns or not, you may really enjoy this movie. Natalie Portman is Jane, a young woman who leaves Missouri for the New Mexico Territory searching for her fiance, who never returned from the Civil War. Life is not kind to anyone on the frontier, and Jane's search is brutally interrupted by a ruthless crime boss who had promised to protect her. How she extracts herself from a horrendous situation may seem like a predictable storyline, but I cheered nonetheless. I loved this movie and will watch it again!

Alone In the Wilderness (DVD)

Alone In the Wilderness (DVD)

My family (husband and 3 kids ages 5, 10, and 12) watched this together on the recommendation of my co-worker, Marilyn S.. We ALL were fascinated by this documentary of a man who moved to the Alaskan wilderness at age 50, built a log home with hand tools, and lived there until he was in his eighties.

It was amazing to watch him craft things like door hinges and a bowl, seeing the cabin in the dead of winter covered in snow. The scenery is beautiful and the narration of life in the wilderness is interesting. Hope you like it as much as we did.

Twenty Trucks
Truck Tunes (DVD)

If you know a child that loves trucks, he/she will love this DVD! The DVD features ten different trucks (bulldozer, grader, impact hammer, front-end loader, forklift, etc.); each truck has its own song that includes facts about that truck and shows corresponding video of that truck doing its job and working on a job site. Each song sounds different so you don't feel like you're listening to the same tune throughout the DVD. While you can find individual Twenty Trucks videos on YouTube, I appreciate the DVD for car trips and for the longer duration.

The Hundred-Foot Journey (DVD)

In this movie starring Helen Mirren, an Indian family is displaced by political upheaval in India. Eventually they find their way to southern France to open a restaurant across the road from a Michelin-rated restaurant owned by Mirren’s character and the boisterous feud begins. However, the characters grow to appreciate each other and something magical develops. Good story.

Outlander (Audiobook)

Diana Gabaldon
Outlander (Audiobook)

I listened to the audiobook version of Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. This is a gripping tale which keeps the reader actively engaged. It is loaded with romance, action, and intrigue. It’s hard to classify this book into just one genre, as it contains historical fiction, romance, time travel, fantasy, action, and military history. The author is very detailed with her description of life in the Scottish Highlands in the 1740s. It’s a carefully written book with three-dimensional characters inhabiting a complex, believable world. Now that Starz is turning the books into a television series, the books are increasing even more in popularity. Due to some of the graphic content in the book, I would recommend it for adult readers.

Claire Randall is a British combat nurse who is reunited with her husband after World War II. They take a second honeymoon to the Scottish Highlands to reconnect and to research her husband’s ancestors. While there, Claire visits an ancient stone circle known as Craigh na Dun, and upon touching the stones she is transported back in time. She suddenly finds herself in war-torn Scotland in the year 1743. She is discovered by a Scottish clan, and, although suspicious of her, they take her in. Her healing skills become valuable to the clan, and she finds safety in the arms of Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. Now she finds herself torn between two worlds and two very different men.

Legends of the Fall (DVD)

Starring  Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt.

I watched this DVD because my band, the Livingston County Concert Band, will be playing the music from it at our concert LCCB goes to Hollywood on May 7, 2016 at Parker Middle School.

This is a fascinating story of the Ludlow family, the battlefields of Europe, and the main character, Tristan, who fails to protect his brother in battle and sets the whole family on a path of self-destruction and betrayal.
