Speedy (DVD)

Like nail-biting action? A sweet love story? A good guy who gets more than his due in the end? A view of bygone days that still feels contemporary? All mixed with humor? Speedy, starring Harold Lloyd, is the movie for you!

When a thug businessman tries to wrench control of the last horse-drawn rail line in New York from his fiancé’s grandfather, Speedy takes the reins. Modern car scenes have nothing on the wild ride undertaken by Speedy as he attempts to get the hijacked carriage back on its track before time runs out. It's amazing it only crashes once. (Be sure to watch In the Footsteps of "Speedy" on the second disc. You’ll find out that a poor horse riding in the carriage kept it from overturning. Wonder what the Humane Society would say about that today!)

Chuck (DVD)

I recommend watching the Chuck TV series. It features a man named Chuck who works at an electronics store as a "computer nerd". Chuck is dragged into the CIA life when he opens an email from an old friend and becomes a walking government computer. The series is action-packed, hilarious, and romantic all at once. I would watch it all over again!

Knight of Cups (DVD)

Starring Christian Bale, this film has very little dialogue throughout the movie. You would think that a film such as this would be boring, but I was mesmerized while watching it. No violence or bad language. There was a plot that showed vivid imagery and party scenes. It’s almost like reading a picture book that has no words. The special features explained how they filmed the movie. There wasn’t much of a script. Actors were put into a situation/scene and were told to ad lib including body language and facial expressions. I think other films directed by Terrence Malick may be of the same essence.

Concussion (Blu-ray and DVD)

This is a super interesting movie about a brilliant young forensic doctor who discovers the reprecussions of closed head injuries in the game of football and makes it his life to let people know. He struggles with all the political issues from the football industry, which tries to curtail his want of informing the public. Very good flick!! Will Smith plays the doctor, who is an immigrant from Africa, but the education that he has acheived from all over the world is amazing. This film was based on true story. Watch it please!!!

The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge

The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge

I was intrigued when people started talking about the movie The Revenant. Their opinions were that the movie was very gruesome. The movie is based on the book The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge by Michael Punke. It is a pioneer story of sorts that takes place during fur trading and struggles with Native Americans. The “gruesome” incident was a man getting attacked by a bear. The fur trader’s back, head, and throat were raked by the bear’s claws. To me, the movie didn’t really show this graphic scene. When reading the book, I felt the injuries that he suffered and how a member of his company tried stitching up his raw skin to cover at least his throat so that he could breathe easier. Two men were assigned to wait until he was dead and bury him so that the rest of the company could complete their mission. The bear-injured man survived after the men deserted him, so thus he wanted revenge for them not helping him. They even took all his weapons. His will to survive compelled him to drag his body until it was healed enough to find sustenance and a way to travel to find the men who deserted him. He was even helped by Native Americans. I loved the survival skills that were mentioned in the book about finding ways to get food without weapons. I preferred the encounter of revenge that took place in the book rather than the movie version.

The Big Short (DVD)

This movie is based on the book of the same name, and is about the fall of the banking industry that caused the world-crippling financial crisis from 2007-2010. While the subject is complex, this film does a great job of explaining the economic intricacies of the banking industry so the story is easy to follow. The characters are great, especially Steve Carell, who plays hedge fund manager Mark Baum. Don’t let the subject intimidate you; this movie is very entertaining and has an important message.

The Finest Hours (DVD and Blu-ray)

This is an incredible movie based on the true story of the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history. In 1952, in a massive storm, an oil tanker is split in half. The Coast Guard sends their only boat (a small one) out to attempt a rescue. You’ll find it utterly amazing what these men went through. A great movie I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

Jane Got a Gun (DVD and Blu-ray)

Whether you grew up watching Westerns or not, you may really enjoy this movie. Natalie Portman is Jane, a young woman who leaves Missouri for the New Mexico Territory searching for her fiance, who never returned from the Civil War. Life is not kind to anyone on the frontier, and Jane's search is brutally interrupted by a ruthless crime boss who had promised to protect her. How she extracts herself from a horrendous situation may seem like a predictable storyline, but I cheered nonetheless. I loved this movie and will watch it again!

Alone In the Wilderness (DVD)

My family (husband and 3 kids ages 5, 10, and 12) watched this together on the recommendation of my co-worker, Marilyn S.. We ALL were fascinated by this documentary of a man who moved to the Alaskan wilderness at age 50, built a log home with hand tools, and lived there until he was in his eighties.

It was amazing to watch him craft things like door hinges and a bowl, seeing the cabin in the dead of winter covered in snow. The scenery is beautiful and the narration of life in the wilderness is interesting. Hope you like it as much as we did.

Twenty Trucks
Truck Tunes (DVD)

If you know a child that loves trucks, he/she will love this DVD! The DVD features ten different trucks (bulldozer, grader, impact hammer, front-end loader, forklift, etc.); each truck has its own song that includes facts about that truck and shows corresponding video of that truck doing its job and working on a job site. Each song sounds different so you don't feel like you're listening to the same tune throughout the DVD. While you can find individual Twenty Trucks videos on YouTube, I appreciate the DVD for car trips and for the longer duration.
