Sherlock Holmes (DVD)

Tuesday, July 6, 2010

I must confess.  I have never read any Sherlock Holmes' mysteries and I don't have a desire to do so.  The only reason I wanted to see the movie Sherlock Holmes was because one of my favorite actors was cast in the lead role.  All I have to say about this movie is "Woo Hoo!!"

It is a rollicking, rolling, reckless portrayal of life in London in the mid to late 1800's (I'm not exactly sure of the year) led by the amazing Robert Downey, Jr.  Whomever cast this movie deserves an Academy Award because the chemistry between Jude Law (as Watson) and Downey is an absolute joy to watch.

Loved it and can't wait for the sequel!

Earth (DVD)

Everyone should see this DVD in order to appreciate our world more.  It is a beautiful adventure of three animal families: polar bears, whales and elephants, and their fight to survive nature.  The scenery is gorgeous and there is a multitude of information about our world.  It makes the viewer wonder how the photographers could possibly have gotten some of their footage.  I highly recommend this for families of all ages.

A Perfect Getaway (DVD)

Tuesday, July 6, 2010
This is a thriller that takes place on the Kalalau Trail on the island of Kauai, Hawaii.  A honeymooning couple decides to take this very difficult trip and meets some interesting and dangerous people.  I've been on the trail for about 5 minutes and I love Hawaii so it was fascinating for me.  This will definitely keep your attention.

Departures (DVD)

Thursday, July 1, 2010

Departures isn't the name of a travel agency, as an out-of-work cellist eventually realizes after answering an employment ad.  What he also eventually realizes is that the job he is hired to do is filled with beauty and dignity and compassion.  I recommend this Japanese movie that won the 2009 Academy Award for Foreign Language Film.

A married couple who normally go on vacation during Christmas are forced to spend it with their families.  I enjoyed that it wasn't as predictable as most movies - an entertaining comedy.

State of Play (DVD)

Russell Crowe plays an investigative reporter who is assigned to investigate the murder of a female assistant to an up and coming politician (Ben Affleck).  I found the twists and turns of the plot kept be interested and the end is a real shocker!  Well worth watching.

Dulcinea del Toboso (DVD)

Thursday, June 24, 2010

Attention Russian speakers and students of Russia!  The delightful movie Dulcinea del Toboso is a follow-up story to Don Quixote.  But wait!  I don't know if it truly is delightful because I don't know a word of Russian and there are no subtitles.  I can tell you that it's fun trying to figure out what is going on and some of the costumes are very interesting.

Taking Chance (DVD)

Thursday, June 24, 2010

This is a true story of the journey home of a fallen soldier.  Lance Corporal Chance Phelps who was killed in Iraq in April 2004.  Kevin Bacon portrays Lt. Col. Michael Strobl who volunteers to escort the body of Chance Phelps to his hometown in Wyoming.  On the journey he experiences many moments of the mourning of strangers.  The respect shown to a fallen soldier is truly touching.  I found this to be a very interesting movie and highly recommend it to all.

Invictus (DVD)

Excellent! Inspirational! Motivating!

This is an exceptional film that will inspire you to beat insurmountable odds. The film is based on a true story. Mandela is elected president of South Africa and seeks to forgive the past, unite two cultures and move the country forward. The Afrikaners love their rugby team; the blacks hate it. What happens next is truly inspiring. Two thumbs up!
