Sofia the First Songs and Story

If you have a little one that enjoys "Sofia the First", they'll love this CD. It features 4 songs from the TV movie and series including our 2 favorites: the "Sofia the First" theme song and "True Sisters" followed by an 18 minute long story with character voices! (The 18 minute story was the TV movie.)

In addition to keeping my little one busy and engaged during a car trip, I think it's the perfect way to begin introducing the concept of Audiobooks to a little one, we'll move to Audiobooks with accompanying picture books. Check our catalog

Good night, Gorilla

Good night, Gorilla

I have been enjoying this, one of my absolute favorite books for 0-3 year olds, with my children.  This picture/board book has wonderfully descriptive pictures that tell the story.  I love the facial expressions and how the story is conveyed with its pictures, and very few words.  The story chronicles a gorilla who manages to swipe the zookeeper’s keys as he does a final evening walk-through at the zoo.  As he says goodnight to each animal, the gorilla unlocks their cage and they all follow the zookeeper home & into his bedroom.  When he turns off the light & his wife says goodnight, she is quite startled to hear a multitude of “goodnights” echoed back to her & shocked when she turns on the light to find a grinning gorilla and his animal friends in her house!

The repetitive ‘goodnight’ phrases throughout the story also make this a great book to read at bedtime.

Chickens to the Rescue

My daughter (age 3) and I have really been enjoying the picture book, "Chickens to the Rescue." Starting at the beginning of the week, the farmer or another family member faces a dilemma each day. But don't worry..."Chickens to the Rescue!!!" They manage to save the day each time. When the farmer accidentally drops his watch in the well, the chickens are right there in bathing suits and snorkel gear to retrieve it! A humorous book for the preschool age (& grown-ups will enjoy as well). Check our catalog

There are books that every kid should read.  This is one of them.  August was born with a facial deformity.  Due to many surgeries he was home schooled until 5th grade.  The journey he, his family, and classmates take in discovering kindness and courage is emotional.  This book resonates for those that feel a little different or are entering a new environment-middle school!  It provides a true lesson in empathy.   Also, in standing up for oneself and others against the bully afraid of the different.  Check our catalog

The One and Only Ivan

Tuesday, March 26, 2013
Katherine Applegate

My 9 year old said this was a "must read".  It is a gem.  Read it slowly, savor it.  Ivan, a mighty silverback gorilla, tells his story from the Big Top Mall and Video Arcade.  He paints his way to where humans make amends, a good zoo, where he gets to enjoy a taste of what was his stolen youth.  Ivan's story has much to tell us about our humanity.  Ivan's voice speaks volumes for caged animals.  Ivan would say I am speaking too much, chattering like a chimp , and crowding the world with noise.  Read the book, hear Ivan's low timber resonate in your heart. This book for grades 4 through 6 is a laugh out loud joy.  Donovan Curtis is a trouble maker in  his middle school but because of an administrative glitch, he ends up in a school for gifted students.  The contrast in the schools is amazing and Donovan really shakes things up because he is a 'normal' kid and the other students are geeks and nerds.  But they all manage to agree while in robotics class and things move on from there in a very funny and exciting way.  All the characters are amazing and the reader can really relate to all the situations Donovan finds himself in.  A great book. Check our catalog

Liesl and Po

This fun and timeless story has great characters, some who are likeable and some who are not.  Liesl is locked in an attic by her stepmother after her

father has died.   Po comes from the Other Side quite unexpectedly to befriend her.  Will, an alchemist’s apprentice, comes into the story and the

three are brought together after Will accidently delivers a box with the most powerful magic in the world to the wrong place.   The adventure they

experience is full of magic, fantasy and human emotion.   This is written for children ages 8-12, but adults will enjoy this.  Check our catalog.

Rosie Sprout's time to shine

Not long ago I read the book Quiet: the power of introverts in a world that can't stop talking by Susan Cain.  The book was very informative, insightful and helpful to us, quiet, shy and sensitive ones.  Then, I came upon the picture book, Rosie Sprout's time to shine. It speaks to every child who just wants to be appreciated and recognized for who they are.  It’s a real gem!  Check our catalog
