Summer Reading 2008 for all ages - the rules are simple and few. Just sign up, read/listen, earn some small prizes and have fun! You don't have to come to the library on certain days or at certain times. Remember, this is a fun way to keep reading throughout the summer, it is not a tutoring programs, but an independent reading game. Registration begins on Monday, June 9.

Registration for all Summer Reading Programs begins on Monday, June 9 at 6:00 p.m. Registration will continue throughout the summer.

Catch the Reading Bug@your library

Listener’s Program
  1. The reading program will begin on June 9 and the last day to record books will be August 15, 2008.
  2. The listener’s program is recommended for children ages 2 and up who are not reading independently.
  3. Register in person in the Youth Services Department. The listener’s goal is to listen to 30 books.
  4. The books may be read to the listener by parents, grandparents, siblings or caregivers.
  5. Books can be selected from the Howell Carnegie District Library.
  6. The listener will receive a “Listener’s Log” – a sheet with 30 bugs on it. Every time you listen to a book you color a bug on your listening log.
  7. The listener will receive an Activity Sheet listing various tasks to complete over the summer. Bring your Activity Sheet with you to the library and have it stamped each time you complete an activity.
    · Reading Goal: 1 prize given for reaching your reading goal.
    · Activity Sheet: First prize for 8 stamps, second prize for 16 stamps.
    · Prizes will only be given once.
  8. Friday, August 15 is the last day to record books and receive your prizes.
Reader’s Program
  1. The reading program will begin on June 9 and the last day to record books will be August 15, 2008.
  2. The program is for independent readers who have not yet completed 3rd grade.
  3. Register in person in the Youth Services Department. Set your reading goal for the summer.
  4. Books can be selected from the Howell Carnegie District Library.
  5. You will be given a “Catch the Reading Bug@Your Library” log to record your titles.
  6. You will receive an Activity Sheet listing various activities to complete over the summer. Bring your Activity Sheet with you to the library and have it stamped each time you complete an activity.
    · Reading Goal: 1 prize given for reaching your reading goal.
    · Activity Sheet: First prize for 8 stamps, second prize for 16 stamps.
    · Prizes will only be given once.
  7. Friday, August 15 is the last day to record books and receive your prizes.
'Tween Program: Don't Bug Me@your library
  1. The reading program will begin on June 9 and the last day to record books will be August 15, 2008.
  2. The program is for those entering 4th or 5th grade.
  3. Register in person in the Youth Services Department. Your goal will be to complete 10 boxes on the Don't Bug Me Chart.
  4. Books can be selected from the Howell Carnegie District Library.
  5. You will be given a “Don't Bug Me@your library” chart to track your progress.
  6. Fill in each chart box as you complete the activity.
    · Don't Bug Me Chart: First prize for completing 3 boxes, second prize for completing 5 boxes, third prize for completing 7 boxes, fourth prize for completing 10 boxes.
    · Prizes will only be given once.
  7. Friday, August 15 is the last day to record books and receive your prizes.
Teen Program: Metamorphosis@your library

Points System:
· Books and Graphic Novels: 1 page = 1 point.
· Magazines: Each Magazine = 25 points (5 max.total).
· Books on CD: 1 hour = 40 points (30 min. = 20 points).

Stop in to collect prizes once you've reached 250, 500, 750 and 1,000 points. Last day is Friday, August 15.

For every 100 points earned, you get to put 1 drawing slip in a bag for the Grand Prize drawings.  All drawing slips must be put in a bag before 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 15.  Winners will be announced at the Teen Final Party (you don't need to be there to win).

Adult Program: Grow Your Mind@your library
  1. The reading program will begin on June 9 and the last day to record books will be August 15, 2008.
  2. The program is for anyone 18 years or older.
  3. Register in person in the Circulation, Reference or Youth Services Department.
  4. Books can be selected from the Howell Carnegie District Library.
  5. You will be given a “Grow Your Mind Game Piece” to record your titles.
  6. For each book you read, you can fill out a drawing slip and enter it in our Grand Prize Drawings for Adults. *Extra drawing slips are available at the Circulation, Reference and Youth Services Desks.
  7. Friday, August 15 is the last day to enter drawing slips.
  8. Winners will be contacted.
