Grand River Avenue in Howell is part of the Grand River Trail. It ran from Detroit through Brighton, Howell, and Fowlerville in Livingston County, on through Lansing and to Grand Rapids. The history of Grand River begins well before the European settlers. Native Americans established footpaths connecting various settlements with hunting and fishing areas. The Grand River Trail was one of these trails that crisscrossed the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. For more information on history and development of Grand River Avenue, check this link.
