Somerset Maugham

Even though the book was written in the early 1940's, it has a timeless feel.

A young man from Chicago gives up his privileged life, his friends and his fiancee to travel the world to seek knowledge and answers to life's meaning.

Maugham's story, with its many diverse characters, is set against the backgrounds of Paris, the Riviera and the East and is considered to be one of his best.
