The Queen (DVD)

This DVD of a British television series combines documentary film with dramatized scenes to give us a behind-the-palace-doors look at England's reigning monarch.

Five British actresses portray the queen from the time before her coronatin to the present day.  We see her first crisis as monarch when her headstrong sister, Margaret, wants to marry a divorced man, Peter Townsend, against the queen's wishes.  Margaret agrees to give up the man she loves, with far-reaching consequences.

The queen's relationship with her prime ministers through the years is shown (she and Margaret Thatcher did not get along).  She was not especially close to her children -- this had an effect on her relationship with Diana, and now with her new daughter-in-law, Camilla Parker-Bowles.  One of her former staff said that Elizabeth seemed to care more about her Corgi dogs and horse racing than anything else in her life.
This was fun and interesting to watch.  It reveals the monarch as we've never seen her before.
