Mr. Popper’s Penguins

My boys and I read Mr. Popper's Penguins, a Newbery Honor Book, so they could go see the movie. It is a sweet story set in an innocent time. Mr. Popper is a seasonal painter. In his off season he dreams and reads about far away countries. He starts this season reading about the South Pole, saying to his wife, "I would much rather go there than read about it. But reading is the next best thing." As the story unfolds he is gifted with a penguin and then another, which have a family. It is silly and fun. It is nothing like the movie, which created great discussion at our house.
