Jodi Picoult
Great Small Things

This book came up as available on Libby, by OverDrive, when I was looking for something to listen to, and since you can never go wrong with Jodi Picoult, I checked it out. I’m glad I did. Kennedy is a white public defender who steps up to help Ruth Jefferson when she’s being arraigned on a murder charge, then continues on her case. Ruth, an African-American nurse with decades of exemplary service and experience, was told not to care for the infant son of white supremacists, but then ends up being alone in the room with the boy when he becomes distressed, and ultimately he dies while she’s performing CPR. Through the backstories of the characters and the unfolding of the legal case, the book explores racism, discrimination, justice, and redemption, and gives fresh awareness of social justice.  Check our catalog
