The First Grader

A man in his eighties in Kenya, a former fighter for independence, receives a letter from the Kenya President announcing a free education for all Kenyans. The man is illiterate and shows up the first day of school to learn to read and write. The determination of Kimani Maruge should make all of us appreciate education more than we do! This is based on a true story. An interesting fact is that the adults in the town have a hard time accepting an 84 year old man at the school but the childen are very accepting!  Available via MelCat
