Enclave

Ann Aguirre

Enclave by Ann Aguirre is the beginning of another dystopian series for teens.  I was reminded of The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan as well as The Hunger Games.  The setting is a post-apocalyptic future in which people only live until their 20’s and there are small pockets of isolated survivors.   The book begins with Girl15 having her naming ceremony during which she is also given the role of a Huntress in her clan.  Her clan lives in the subway tunnels below New York City and has never seen sunlight.   Her job is to hunt “Freaks”, zombie like creatures, and keep them away from their settlement.  She is paired up with another  Hunter, Fade, who was born outside of the tunnels but adopted with the Enclave found him wandering alone in the tunnels.  The Freaks are getting more aggressive and decimating settlements.  After returning from a mission, Fade and Deuce are framed for a crime and exiled from the enclave.    Here their adventures really begin and the stage is set for the sequel.
