Jaqueline Woodson
Brown Girl Dreaming
I chose to listen to this book instead of reading it because I wanted to hear it in the authors’ voice. I am so glad I did! The story would not have had the same impact if I had read it in my voice in my head. The story is about an African American girl growing up in the 60's and 70’s.
I usually stick to the Fairy Tale Retelling or Fantasy genres so I was a bit worried that I would not "get into it." Happily, I was wrong! Jaqueline and I had some similar experiences growing up in the south although we had very different childhoods. The way she wrote the story and her voice was very soothing, almost lyrical. Every page is a gift of innocence and discovery as she matures into the great author she is today. If you are looking for a break from your usual genre or want to read a beautifully written book that takes you back in time, this is the book for you.  Check our Catalog
